Choosing the right tree species for biomass energy is about balancing growth against high wood density and heat value. SAA has established 4 species trial plots in Mazowe, Hurungwe, Banket and Featherstone to evaluate the growth performance of 15 species that may have potential for tobacco curing. The species under trial include 11 eucalypts of which 8 are pure species and 3 hybrids, four non-eucalyptus exotics and one indigenous acacia. The trees were planted in blocks of 10 trees that were replicated four times on each trial site. The objective of this trial is to extend the range of tree species that could be grown for firewood apart from the few commonly planted Eucalyptus species.
