Pilot Community Afforestation

About 40 hectares were planted in 10 wards under a community woodlot trial run in conjunction with Pfura Rural District Council during the 2014-15 season and an additional 70 ha was planted during the 2015/16 season. 7 ha were also planted under the same scheme in Makoni Rural District. The community provided land and labour while SAA provided seedlings and other inputs. This pilot project will be continued in the coming season to fully understand the dynamics involved before scaling it up to other districts. To develop a culture of tree planting in Zimbabwe, SAA introduced a tree seedling voucher scheme, which involved distributing seedling vouchers to communities that attend SAA’s fire awareness campaigns and workshops. Each voucher was worth 20 tree seedlings, which the individual will claim from SAA at the onset of the rainy season. SAA believes that by keeping the voucher for redemption of seedlings after 4-6 months, it is clear demonstration of commitment towards tree planting.
